Durham’s communities are thriving with small business activity. The 2013 Employment Survey shows there is a thriving entrepreneurial spirit in Durham, with 71 per cent of the companies surveyed employing 10 or less employees. Those numbers are expected to continue to grow. Durham Region is home to many creative and prosperous entrepreneurs that are moving the region forward as the choice location for business. Support services are abundant in Durham Region, as per the list below:

Business Advisory Centre Durham (BACD)

The BACD is a non-profit organization funded in partnership by the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Employment, and The Regional Municipality of Durham. The BACD helps launch and accelerate small business by providing one-on-one consultation; educational seminars and workshops to help small businesses acquire the skills and knowledge to effectively manage and grow. BACD is part of the Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs (ONE).

Spark Centre

Spark Centre helps start and grow innovative technology-based companies in Durham Region and Northumberland County. They help start-up companies find the best path to market, and surround them with the tools, people and connections they need to get there faster. Spark also helps existing companies develop relationships and create strategies that can drive faster growth.

Spark Centre is the place where entrepreneurs, innovators, investors, researchers, and students come together to exchange ideas, help each other succeed, and form an innovation ecosystem that creates jobs and wealth in our regions. Created by the Durham Strategic Energy Alliance, Spark Centre is one of 14 not-for-profit Regional Innovation Centres (RICs) that form part of the Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs (ONE).

Boards of Trade / Chambers of Commerce

Boards of trade (BoT) and chambers of commerce (CoC) are the connecting pieces of a successful economy. They provide the physical forums and virtual places needed to address issues that have an impact on business, build lasting relationships and strengthen the profile of Durham Region’s business community. They also provide valuable services for your business, including market data, tips, trends and tools; downtown beautification programs; and local business directories.

These membership-driven, volunteer-led organizations have a mission to grow the Durham Region economy, serve as a strong voice for business, and, most importantly, deliver value to its members. There are seven organizations in Durham Region.
